Hair transplant methods

We explain long-hair and unshaven hair transplant, DHI and Sapphire FUE side by side: how they are performed, when we consider each one, and their limitations.

The methods at a glance

This table gives you a general overview. Which method suits you becomes clear during the examination and planning.

Comparison of the three methods
MethodDonor areaGraft placementOften considered forLimitations
Long-hair and unshaven hair transplantThe hair is not cut short, or only narrow strips are cut short.Depending on the plan, into channels opened beforehand or with an implanter pen.Limited areas; people who do not want the procedure to be noticed.Usually takes longer.
DHI hair transplantShaven or unshaven, depending on the plan. With a pen-like tool called an implanter.Implanting between existing hairs.Preparing and using the pens requires an experienced team.
Sapphire FUEUsually shaved.Channels are first opened with a sapphire-tipped blade, and then the grafts are placed with forceps.Shaven or partially shaven plans. The sapphire tip alone does not mean a better result.

Donor area: shaven, partially shaven, unshaven

We usually take the grafts from the back and sides of the head, that is, from the donor area. How we prepare this area also affects your appearance after the procedure. Here is how we distinguish the three options:

Shaven
We cut the hair short in the donor area, and often in the recipient area too. This way, we work with a full view of the donor area.
Partially shaven
We cut the hair short only in narrow strips beneath the longer hair; the hair above covers these areas.
Unshaven
We take and place the grafts one by one without cutting your hair short.

Long-hair and unshaven hair transplant

In an unshaven transplant, we generally do not cut your hair short; in a long hair transplant, for suitable patients, we take and transplant the follicles while keeping the strands long. They are not the same procedure, and they do not suit every plan.

DHI hair transplant

A form of FUE in which we place the grafts with a pen-like tool called an implanter. It is an option we may choose when grafts need to be placed between existing hairs.

Sapphire FUE hair transplant

A form of FUE in which we open the channels for the grafts with a sapphire-tipped blade. It is not a separate method; the difference lies in the tip we use to open the channels.

Which method is right for me?

The answer comes from the examination, not from a table. During the examination, we look at the following together:

  • The size and location of the thinning area
  • Hair density in the donor area
  • The thickness and curl of your hair
  • Your expectations for how you will look after the procedure, for example whether or not you want to cut your hair short

You make the final decision together with the doctor who examines you.

What determines the cost?

We do not publish prices on this site. The cost varies from person to person and depends on:

  • The number of grafts needed
  • The method to be used
  • The scope of the procedure, for example whether it will be completed in a single session
  • The planning done after the examination

We give you cost information tailored to you after the initial call and planning.

Who may not be suitable for a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is not the right option for everyone. In the following situations, we may postpone the transplant or suggest a different approach:

  • If there is not enough healthy hair in the donor area
  • If the cause of the hair loss is not yet clear
  • If it would be better to try medical treatments, such as medication, first
  • If there is a large gap between your expectations and the result that is possible

You can also consult a dermatologist about the cause of your hair loss and the treatment options.
